Holstein is home to the beautiful Town and Country Golf and Recreation Area of Holstein, Iowa. To the local people it is known as the Holstein Country Club or just “The Club”. It features a pond, where fishing is allowed, established trees and well-groomed greens. It is a par 35 coming in at a length of 3,152 yards from the longest tees. It has a practice green plus an area to practice your driving or iron game. The club house has a deck surrounding half of the outside overlooking our beautiful pond and par 3 fourth hole.
The course is proud to say that Aaron Nedved was named the 2016 Iowa 9-hole course superintendent of the year. Aaron takes great pride in how the course looks and plays.
A little history of the course. In the summer of 1965 Charles “Chuck” Kofmehl had a thought of building a golf course in Holstein. The idea was tabled due to the necessary funds needed to build it. A few months later Chuck brought it up again and discussed with some local community members and it was agreed it was a great idea. The two largest problems were obviously raising the necessary funds and finding a site on which to build a golf course. It was discussed possibly finding a site between Holstein and Cherokee, but it was decided it needed to be in Holstein. To come up with the necessary funds Chuck came up with the idea of giving a lifetime membership to anyone who would pay $1,000 up front for 10 shares of stock. Ten area citizens committed to the idea and the possibility became a reality. Now a location for the course had to be found. A short time later Albert Kastner said he would consider selling 76 acres located on the southeast edge of Holstein. This possibility was pursued and Albert agreed to sell 76 acres on a 10 year real estate contract at a favorable interest rate. The golf course became a reality with aid of many community members volunteering time, labor and equipment. Approximately 600 trees were planted and a dam constructed to create a pond. The first board directors and/or members were as follows: Lloyd Boothby, Charles Kofmehl, Warren Lasher, Vernon Kahl, John Barker, Clarkson Carnes, Ardell Downs, Romane Eckerman, Pat Forristal, Elvin Leonard, Wayne Michaelson, Don Sander, K. W. Gray, Thomas Yates, Ernest Vohs and George Sokolowski.
The rest is history and now we have one of the finest golf courses in northwest Iowa.
This club is a little unusual compared to other clubs in the area in that we are open year round, only closing on Monday’s in the winter months. Our members really support the facility. We have approximately 360 social and/or golf members. Also besides golfing and a little fishing, the course is the venue for the Tim Thomas Invitational high school cross country meet where several area schools participate. The club has facilities to rent for about any function, such as graduations, showers, anniversaries, business meetings or wedding receptions.
Please come and enjoy a great round or two of golf or just grab your favorite beverage and sit out on the deck and enjoy the beautiful view. For more details give the club a call at (712) 368-2530.
